Hyundai Australia, a subsidiary of South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Company, opened orders for the 2022 Ioniq 5 electric car on the morning of October 12, with avid interest causing the company's website to crash as the 240 vehicles initially allocated to the local market were quickly snapped up by buyers.

Confirming that the model had initially sold out, Hyundai said that it is looking to acquire a second allocation of 160 cars to help meet at least some of the demand from more than 13,000 interested buyers.

The Australian version of the EV will be sold in one trim level with two available powertrains. The base 2WD version is equipped with a single electric motor powering the rear axle and producing 214 bhp (160 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. This variant is priced from AUD71,900. The...
