The site sits behind the listed Powderhall Stables building, and was formerly a waste transfer station. According to Cruden Building, who submitted the application to Edinburgh Council, 107 homes will be made including affordable housing and townhouses

On their application, Cruden Building said: "The proposed development site is situated on Broughton Road, immediately behind the listed Powderhall Stables.

"The site was formerly a waste transfer station and since demolition has been vacant, temporarily used as a site compound for the Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven project. The total site area of the land within the application site boundary is 1.89 hectares."

The land sits between Edinburgh's city centre and Leith, with a range of shops and supermarkets within walking distance. The nearest tram stop is a 16 minute walk away.

A gunpowder mill is said to have been established on the site back in 1695. Powderhall Railway Station opened on the site in 1895, though closed only a few decades later in 1917.
