Important advice for holidaymakers who have booked a festive getaway

Russia, India and Morocco are among the latest nations banning visitors from the UK and the EU is planning to issue a statement covering all the nations covered by the Schengen border-free zone.

Boris Johnson also called on residents in Tier 4 regions of this country to remain at home even if they have festive breaks booked.

Travel trade association ABTA has issued advice for anyone planning to travel overseas in the coming weeks.

A spokesperson said: “The latest restrictions on UK travellers entering some foreign countries shows the ongoing uncertainty around travel and the extremely difficult operating environment for UK travel businesses.

"Not only do the latest developments affect people’s ability to travel but also consumer confidence to plan and book future holidays.

"The Government must step in and provide tailored support for the travel sector – in recognition of the number of jobs at risk and the important role the UK travel industry will play in supporting the UK’s wider economic recovery.

"The Scottish Government has already pledged tailored support for the travel industry, the UK Government and other devolved nations must follow suit without delay."

Advice for holidaymakers from ABTA

As the UK Government is currently advising against all but essential travel to the majority of destinations, there will be significantly fewer people taking package holidays than usual at this time of year, although the introduction of the ban for Madeira will affect some packages.
