Kate Middleton's grandfather and Prince Philip met nearly 50 years before her engagement to William

Years before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were even born, both of their grandfathers crossed paths.

According to the Insider, Kate's grandfather, Peter Middleton, was a captain in the Royal Air Force and served as co-pilot during Prince Philip's two-month tour of South America in 1962.

The two were photographed together when Prince Philip returned from the tour and disembarked at Heathrow Airport.

Peter died two weeks before Kate and Prince William publicly announced their engagement, in November 2010, but his obituary says that Buckingham Palace sent Middleton a thank-you letter and a pair of gold cuff links after the tour.

Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99, just weeks before the Cambridges were due to mark their tenth wedding anniversary.
