Latest UK Foreign Office travel advice for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote

The UK Foreign Travel Office has now updated its guidance following the discovery of a new highly transmissible strain of COVID-19 which has been identified in the UK.

Londoners and others from Tier 4 areas who may have planned trips to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura for some winter sun, will not be allowed to travel to the Canary Islands according to the UK Foreign Travel Office site.

Along with the travel ban within the UK which prevents people from leaving or entering Tier 4 areas, this also applies to foreign travel.

However, there are a few exemptions that can be made to permit visiting these destinations such as travelling for work purposes; although, people are advised to follow the rules as they apply in those cases.

On the Government website the advice says: "If you live outside a Tier 4 area you may still transit into or through a Tier 4 area to travel abroad if you need to, but you should carefully consider whether you need to do so. In addition, you should follow the public health advice in the country you’re visiting.

"If you do need to travel overseas from a Tier 4 area and are legally permitted to do so, for example, because it is for work, even if you are returning to a place you've visited before, you should look at the rules in place at your destination."
