According to figures released by Public Health England on December 21 Monday, across Hillingdon, Ealing and Hounslow, cases in the boroughs have been soaring with Hounslow bosses confirming it has reached its highest rate of coronavirus during the pandemic.

Hillingdon shows the highest rate with 1,362 cases -a rate of 443.8 per 100,000 in the seven days leading up to December 17.

However it recorded half the number of cases -629 -and a rate of 205 per 100,000 in the week before.

The figures come as the Government revealed on Saturday, December 19, that a new strain of Covid-19 has spread quickly across London and the south east.

Ealing has also reported a steep rise of 1,291 cases in the December 21 update, or a 377.7 per 100,000 weekly rate, compared to also recording 629 cases, and a weekly rate of 184 per 100,000 also in the seven days up to December 10.

Council leader Julian Bell said the Tier 4 announcement was "incredibly disappointing" but the "right thing to do". He added: "Please follow these new rules. The new variant of the virus is virulent and we must do everything to save lives and protect our loved ones over this festive period."

And Hounslow has revealed its rate of 405.9 per 100,000, or 1,102 new cases, compared to its week previously recording a rate of 198.9 per 100,000 or 540 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The surge is mirroring what's been happening in East London in recent weeks with a huge surge in cases. Havering is currently the worst-affected of any London borough with 2916 positive cases in the seven days to December 17 -1123.5 per 100,000.

At that point, the health boss said the borough’s weekly coronavirus rate was 283 per 100,000, “the highest ever in the borough”.
