London Tier 4: London Covid-19 cases doubled in a week and there's been a huge single day spike since then

City Hall has released the most up to date figures which show from December 9 to 15, 41,936 people tested positive in London at a rate of 468 cases per 100,000 population.

This seven day selection of data was up until the day before London was moved into Tier 3, on Wednesday, December 16, and just as the Government was becoming aware of the new mutant strain of coronavirus -so a lot has already changed in the few days since then.

And this is shown as on the first day London was in Tier 4, which was Sunday, December 20, there were 11,577 positive cases in London alone.

This represents a huge jump and tallies up with the announcement the new variant could increase transmission of COVID-19 by as much as 70 per cent.

The weekly stats compares with 20,212 cases and a rate of 226 per 100,000 people for the previous week December 2 -8 -so it more than doubled.

On Saturday, December 19 there were 2,909 COVID-19 patients in London hospitals and 322 of them needed a ventilator. This compares with 2,092 patients ad 256 on a ventilator the previous week.
