London Tier 4: 'Mayhem' at London Asda so busy social distancing was 'impossible'

With a new strain of coronavirus ripping through London and the South East, more than 40 countries have announced a suspension of travel with the UK.

The worrying developments also saw France stop freight travelling from the UK, which caused some people to believe there may be a food shortage in the coming days.

Pictures posted on social media shows rows and rows of empty shelves at a number of London supermarkets on Monday December 21.

One shopper, who was shopping at Asda in Roehampton, said it was "mayhem".

The woman tweeted: "Mayhem at Roehampton store in London.

"Let everyone in no queues, people trying to keep distance but can’t, no help or organisation from staff who are ample and just talking."

According to the Daily Mail, there were chaotic scenes at Asda in Wandsworth, with much of the fruit and veg aisles empty.

Hundreds of people were spotted queuing outside Asda at Clapham Junction, while similar scenes were seen outside Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury's stores in the capital.

“There were queues everywhere, I saw stockpiling of things like toilet roll again, but with fresh fruit and veg, there wasn’t any, Kevin Edger said.

“It was like being in a supermarket that hadn’t stocked up in weeks.

“It was crazy. Back like the start of March… there were even some people shouting at each other over the last sprouts, talk about Christmas spirit and all that.”

One shopper shared a video with MyLondon on Monday that showed a massive queue of shoppers braving the rain at Waitrose in Beckenham.
