In a vote, the Louisiana House of Representatives approved two bills that would change the manner in which state courts handle automobile accident claims, according to thecentersquare.

While supporters of the bills claim that they will lead to cheaper auto insurance, those opposing believe that the proposals will give insurers and other big companies an unfair advantage over individual plaintiffs.

House Bill 44 by Rep Raymond Garofalo seeks to lower the amount of money at stake that would trigger the right to a civil jury trial from USD50,000 to USD5,000. For cases worth between USD5,000 and USD35,000, the bill calls for a six-person jury in which five jurors must concur to reach a verdict.
