Marks and Spencer has been slammed by shoppers for selling a "posh" egg and cress sandwich for £6 in its cafes

The sarnie is said to contain just 51g more filling than the £2.65 version offered in the store.

According to MailOnline, the cafe sandwich says it contains an entire sliced egg that has been doused in salad cream and mayonnaise topped off with pepper and watercress.

The sandwich is completed with two slices of "nine-grain" bread, weighing in at 166g worth of filling.

The standard sandwich reportedly contains 115g.

The sandwich was spotted in the Marks and Spencer Cafe

Social media users have been left puzzled by the price difference.

Sharing a picture of the butty, one said: "This country is finished."

While another said: "Where's the un-posh one and is it cheaper?"

Another confused commenter said: "£6 for an egg sandwich! World has gone mad."

A fourth commenter highlighted the cost difference between purchasing the ingredients. They said: "£6 for two sandwiches, you could buy a loaf of bread, butter plus fillings of your choice for that and make many sandwiches."
