The judging for the pens of 10 gimmer lambs this year was very ably judged by Mr Nigel Barker, Dalton Old Hall, Carnforth. Judging this year's runs of 100 or more this year was put into the very capable hands of Mr John Bell, Frosterley and Mr Neil Allan, Killington, who awarded their prizes as follows: Prize list (pens of 10): 1st - W M Reed & Sons, Lands; 2nd - R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield; 3rd - T A Collingwood & Sons; 4th - K & H A Ridley, Allenshields Best run of 100 - R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield As per usual the pens of 10 were judged first through the ring and a magnificent entry of 15 pens were presented before the judge, after much deliberation Mr Barker awarded the GW Robinson, Rosebowl and Champion NEMSA rosette to John, Steven and Andrew Reed, Lands Farm. An outstanding achievement as this is now the sixth year in a row for the Reed Family. The pen went on

to achieve the highest price on the day of £400, selling to regular purchaser, Mr P Elliot, Bank House, Penrith.

After the single pens were judged, the best runs of 100 were inspected and taking this years William Reed Perpetual Trophy for the best run of 100 lambs went to Mrs R & Mr M J Lee, Harwood Shield. This the second year in succession for Harwood Shield to win the best run of 100 or more.

The top pen from Mrs R & Mr M J Lee, Harwood Shield went on to realise an impressive £255.00. Sharing this achievement later on in the day was a very strong and bonny pen from Messrs K & HA Ridley, Allenshields Farm.

Another fine show of lambs again this year with new purchasers commenting on how well the lambs looked and the general strength and quality of the breeding behind the sheep. Credit must be given to all those that had sheep forward and continue to support the sale.

They were then rewarded with a very competitive trade throughout the sale and a noticeable increase in demand for smaller, running type lambs with

some pens seeing a rise of £25 compared to last year.

Larger tupping type lambs

once again very easily cashed and regularly broke the £150.00 barrier. Sale average for this years sale is £12 up on the previous year.

With the changeable weather in June and July now a distant memory finished values have thankfully also been changeable since mid-summer and increasing returns have resulted in renewed confidence round the store ring.

A number of vendors market their cattle annually at this sale and all reported a significant lift on the year with the sale peaking at £1840 for a hefty Angus cross bullock from Peter Findlay, Stoop Rigg. Messrs Philipson, North Shotton sold a powerful sort at £1820 and Snowdon Oates, Ouston Farms sold a smashing pure bred Charolais heifer to realise £1810. Whilst top end sorts sold well it was the middle age order that saw the biggest lift - those cattle from 11-17 months and the majority of vendors were ecstatic at their returns.

Brian Urwin & Family, Lynnshields, Park Village brought their annual run of super Angus cattle and topped at £1760 for a heifer with breeding potential and £1600

for their lead pen of bullocks at 16 months of age to average £1386 for 25 cattle sold representing a lift of over £170 on the year.

Messrs Thirlwell, Hetherington hit the ring with some thumping bullocks and topped at £1560 for a belting Stabiliser cross and with another at £1550 at just 13/14 months no-one should ever assume

the breed cannot be sold at auction.

Chris Young, Hawks Nest, Galashiels brought his annual load of upstanding Luing bullocks and these well-bred, hill-bred cattle topped at £1380 to average a very level £1330 and equate to a lift of over £200 per head on the year.

Likewise and in a similar vein Alan Parker, High Wooley, Allendale continues to revel in his switch to the Hereford stock sire and sold ten smart heifers to a top of £1380 and an average of £1308 from £1121 twelve months earlier.

Another highlight of the day was the forty-strong pen of Angus cross, hill-bred bullock calves - the annual consignment from The Walton Family, Flotterton that hit the ring with great style to top at £1380 for a super pen of three with a further pen of seven cashing at £1350 and all 43 calves selling to average £1306 throughout - a lift of over £180 on the year to the delight of the Coquet valley based livestock supremo's.

With one further sale of store stock remaining in September the auctioneers are now looking forward to the six prize shows and sales of cattle that will be held next month and urge producers with cattle to sell - continental cross or native breed sired to contact the team on Tyne Green to discuss the many and obvious benefits of consigning cattle for sale through the Hexham ring.
