MP gathers engineers for Swing Bridge visit in bid to get it swinging again; Newcastle Central MP, Chi Onwurah has brought together a team of engineers to visit the bridge.

A world class team of engineers have been brought together to make Newcastle's Swing Bridge swing again.

Newcastle Central MP, Chi Onwurah has gathered a team of engineers to visit the bridge and see what needs to be done to get the bridge swinging in time for its 150th anniversary in 2026. The team included representatives from engineering companies across the UK and from as far afield as the US, as well as engineers from the Port of Tyne and Newcastle City Council.

Following a site tour, Chi hosted a meeting in Historic England's Bessie Surtees House, overlooking the bridge, where the engineers thrashed out plans to get the Swing Bridge swinging. Companies volunteering their assistance included Hanover, Hyserve Hydraulics, R&G Fluid Power Group and Hydrasun.

Following the visit, Chi said: "It is so inspiring to see the internal workings of the iconic Swing Bridge with a world class team of engineers and hear their enthusiasm and ideas to get the bridge swinging. It was daunting to hear first hand from Port of Tyne and Newcastle City Council engineers the challenges of working with such a historic structure but fantastic to have the support of local and international engineering companies. The Swing Bridge is an important part of world engineering history. We will get the bridge swinging again."
