Newcastle Castle: A weekend of brilliant events in store for St George's Day; Newcastle Castle to host events celebrating St George, Shakespeare, and the city's 'own Dick Whittington'.

St George, Shakespeare and 'the Dick Whittington of Newcastle' are to be celebrated with a weekend of events at Newcastle's Castle Keep and Black Gate next month.

On Saturday, April 23, the patron saint will ride on horseback through the Black Gate (the medieval gatehouse of the Castle) at midday, signalling a start to the festivities.

There will be the chance to settle back and watch Newcastle's Favourite Shakespeare Film, as chosen by visitors, on Sunday April 24.

"2016 is a big year for anniversaries," explains Ben Smith, Development Manager at the Castle.

"Shakespeare died 400 years ago, so we're letting people vote for their favourite film based on his work via our website, which they can then see screened in the Castle Keep."

Voting closes Thursday, March 31 and the winning entry will be announced the following week.

"It's also 800 years since the appointment of Newcastle's very first Mayor."

Appropriately then, historical mayors Roger Thornton and John Marley will be in attendance on St George's Day.

Roger Thornton came from rags to riches in the 1400s and is popularly known as the 'Dick Whittington' of Newcastle. A large illustrative brass of Thornton, his wife and children was commissioned after his death and still hangs in St Nicholas Cathedral.
