Newcastle's largest ever haul of suspected illegal cigarettes has been found in the West End.

Trading Standards officers stumbled upon a secret stash with an estimated street value of [pounds sterling]6,000 during a routine visit to a shop on Mill Lane, Elswick.

After seeing a man with rolling tobacco standing outside Marwoin Mini Market, officers grew suspicious and searched a nearby car.

Inside were boxes containing 17,640 cigarettes and 4kg of rolling tobacco.

The illicit horde - including suspected counterfeit tabs - has been seized and will be sent off for analysis.

Councillor Stephen Powers, Cabinet Secretary for Newcastle City Council, said: "The significant seizures made this week are another victory in our ongoing campaign to stamp out the sale of illegal tobacco in and around Newcastle.

"All tobacco is harmful to people's health and we are pleased in the knowledge that a haul of this size can't get into the hands of groups such as underage smokers. Ultimately it also means that money has been taken away from criminals looking to line their pockets with unlawful activities.
