How many of us climbed the steps intothe old Gallowgate Endover the years?

From those terraces, generations of fans watched the ups and downs ofNewcastle United.

The famous 'end' began life as an earth bank as the club established itself in the 1890s.

In the 1930s, United pressed ahead with plans replacing the St James' ash and wood terracing with concrete.

And if Gallowgate End regulars had to cope with whatever the weather threw at them, plans to build a roof in the late 1920s were dropped after endless planning wrangles.

Meanwhile, if most of us who stood on the old Gallowgate will remember how the turnstiles were built into a brick wall, up until the 1940s there was a fence with barbed wire there.

In more recent decades, perhaps two famous games best saw the packed Gallowgate End in animated full voice.

On May 9, 1993, Newcastle United crowned a title-winning promotion season with a 7-1 win over Leicester.

In a breathless first half, the Gallowgate exploded in pandemonium six times as the goals rained in at that end.

Twelve years earlier, there were similar scenes of meltdown on the same terraces asKevin Keeganscored the only goal of the game in his debut against Queen Park Rangers.
