Few phrases stir Geordie blood more than "Fortress St James' Park". And that moniker is never more apt than when Newcastle United welcome Continental opposition.

But just how does the home record that Borussia Dortmund will hope to defy compare with that of other Premier League clubs in the Champions League The Magpies boast an astonishing home record in European competition. Even more astonishing, in fact, than Eddie Howe's overall record on Tyneside soil as United manager.

Newcastle have won six of their seven games at home in all competitions so far this season. In total, they have suffered just five defeats in 39 games in their own backyard since Howe took over. However, their home record against foreign opposition is even more remarkable, having lost just one of their last 29 home games in European competition: a 2-1 defeat to Deportivo La Coruna in the Intertoto Cup way back in 2006.

So, do Newcastle have a claim to possess the finest fortress in England against overseas invaders We have looked back on the home records of all the Premier League "big six" in their own last 29 European games to find out.

Manchester United are bottom of that particular table, boasting both most home defeats and fewest home wins. losing a dismal eight times a Old Trafford in their last 29 European home games. That includes their 3-2 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray just before the international break.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal also lag behind the Magpies when it comes to most home wins in their last 29 European home nights. The Blues have won just 17 times at Stamford Bridge in that period, while the other two clubs have recorded 19 victories apiece.

Only Tottenham's recent European home form and -- unsurprisingly -- reigning Champions Leage winners Manchester City's record at the Etihad compare well with that of Newcastle at St James' Park. But...
