Newcastle United players were told to "set the tempo" in their rousing pre-match team talk ahead of the 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace.

On a day when Palace fans arrived at St James' Park dreaming of picking up another famous away win -after beating Man United 1-0 at Old Trafford last time out -Newcastle did not allow the Eagles to settle from the get-go. Jacob Murphy's early strike left Sam Johnstone clutching at thin air as his shot looped into the net and further goals from Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff secured the points before many a half-time pint or cuppa had even been touched.

The second half was just a case of going through the motions for fans but for players it was a case of seeing out the game and boosting the goal difference a little more. But Newcastle, after an international break, were keen to set the narrative.

Murphy, fresh from a warm weather training camp in Dubai, told Chronicle Live straight after the game: "That's how we try to start every week now. "The buzzword for us in training throughout the week was 'tempo' and that's what we achieved, it translated into the game and we got off to the flying start!".
