Newcastle United are continuing to work on transfer targets and are still looking to make a first breakthrough before the end of the month.

Rafa Benitez said last week that the club were happy with the "good progress" they are making as they look to supplement a squad that needs to be more balanced and continue more "know-how" ahead of a potentially gruelling Championship campaign.

While a signing is not thought to be imminent the club are holding talks with several players and do anticipate significant changes in the squad this summer. It's hoped that a first move could be completed before the players return on June 28.

But Newcastle have moved to distance themselves from several supposed targets, including Nice forward Alexandre Mendy, Will Grigg of Wigan and Gimnastica striker Jose Naranjo. United are in talks with several players but the main targets are yet to emerge. The club are unlikely to bring in Championship specialists, preferring to invest in players who would be comfortable if they achieved an instant return to the top flight.
