North East's fly tipping capital of household rubbish exposed; Government figures reveal this local authority area also had the third highest number of incidents in England.

The North East capital of household fly-tipping has been revealed - and it's also the third worst area in the whole of England.

County Durham has been identified as a black spot for private and resident incidents of illegal dumping waste.

In the latest figures, which cover 2016/2017, there were 534 incidents of this type of fly-tipping there.

Working out at more than 10 incidents a week, only Bradford with 854 and Leicester with 745 had higher number.

Ian Hoult, neighbourhood protection manager at Durham County Council, said:"This figure should be viewed in the context of us serving one of the biggest local council areas in the country, with around 241,500 households.

"We are committed to cracking down on the flytipping which blights our beautiful county and take a pro-active approach to preventing these incidents.

"Our award-winning Operation Stop It campaign included deploying neighbourhood wardens and covert cameras to fly-tipping hotspots and led to many successful prosecutions and a significant reduction in recorded incidents.

"We also work hard to educate residents and businesses on their own responsibilities in terms of how to correctly dispose of their waste and look after the environment."

The research was carried out by the property websiteSellhousefast.uk.

It was based on figures released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
