A severe weather warning for ice on untreated road surfaces has been issued for the next 24 hours.

The Met Office yellow weather alert says ice is likely to form tonight across the North East and that the public should take care.

A chief forecaster said: "Further showers are likely through Christmas Eve, wintry on hills and over higher roads, but most showers clearing southwards overnight.

"Widespread ice then developing on untreated surfaces as winds ease and colder...
