Owner locked his panting dogs in a car in Newcastle during a HEATWAVE; A crowd of people formed outside the car to try and aid the dogs before their owner returned to angry scenes.

Two dogs were trapped in a sweltering car for around an hour during a heatwave.

However owner Jahangir Hussain has been allowed to keep the dogs after a judge ruled his actions hadn't been malicious.

Newcastle Magistrates' Courtheard there was "no lasting impact" on the dogs' health following their ordeal.

The 31-year-old left his dogs in the centre ofNewcastleon May 7 while picking his mother-in-law up.

Prosecutor Brian Payne admitted the sunroof and windows were left slightly open to allow some air in.

But a crowd became "increasingly concerned" about the dogs' wellbeing.

"A number of people took it upon themselves to assist the dogs," added Mr Payne.

"The dogs are described as panting and took cover in the footwell."

Some even tried putting water through the window's gap as police arrived.

When Hussain returned, the prosecutor added: "He was faced with what can be described as a hostile group of people."

A foul-mouthed exchange unfolded before he was arrested.

Records show temperatures exceeded 20 degrees in Newcastle that day, although the temperature at the time is unknown.

Hussain's solicitor conceded: "There was no question it was a hot day."

But mitigating, Jonathan Cousins added steps had been taken to cool the dogs, only for his client to have been delayed returning to the vehicle.

"That delay was an error on his part," claimed the solicitor.

"He was away longer than he should have been but his actions were correct."

Initially due to stand trial over four denied offences, Hussain pleaded guilty to a pair of amended charges on Friday.
