Prolific Northumberland shoplifter caught stealing booze just hours after prison release; Jamie Brown stole £100 worth of alcohol merely hours after being released from prison.

A thief who was caught shoplifting booze merely hours after being released from prison and been put back behind bars.

Last week, Jamie Brown was released from prison after serving 16 weeks for shoplifting. But, within a matter of hours staff from the Co-Op on Newbiggin Road in Ashington had contacted police to report he had stolen £100 worth of alcohol from the shop. Officers from the Northumbria Police Neighbourhood Policing Team NPT were then sent to the shop before locating Brown and arresting him.

On Saturday morning, Brown appeared at Bedlington Magistrates' Court where he admitted the theft. He was later recalled to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Kath Smith said: "Our local businesses should not have to tolerate aggressive behaviour from offenders like Brown, who persistently shoplift and believe the law doesn't apply to them. Brown left prison and within a matter of hours was back inside a shop, helping himself to items he knew had no money to pay for, committing an offence he had also previously served jail time for proving he has not learned his lesson.

"Officers acted quickly once the initial report came in and were able to respond swiftly and charge Brown in less than 12 hours. Thank to our criminal justice partners Brown was remanded and awaits sentence."

Sgt Smith added: "This is a positive result for our community and a fantastic example of neighbourhood policing doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Brown is just one example of the work being carried out across Ashington to clampdown on shoplifting. Within the last six months, the NPT have arrested at least 12 prolific shoplifters...
