Scottish mum gives kitchen incredible £350 makeover after being quoted £8k

Stephanie McCormick had hoped to give the room in her recently purchased house a new lease of life, but was taken aback when the family were quoted £8,000 for the kitchen

Desperate to still have the room redone, Stephanie took on the work herself, and was able to make the kitchen unrecognisable for just £350.

Taking on some impressive DIY, the mum-of-two explained how she was able to pick up a lot of items from discount home stores before getting to work.

Managing to work on the kitchen whilst juggling two children and a job as a complex needs assistant in an enhanced provision school, Stephanie wowed other users on a DIY Facebook page, reports the Record.

Sharing her DIY journey to the DIY On A Budget UK Group, she wrote: "We made the leap onto the property ladder in October 2021 when we purchased a three-bedroom detached bungalow in the rural village in the Scottish Borders

"While the house was in a good state of repair, it needed bringing up to date and a bit of our own style splashed onto it.

"The kitchen in particular was your typical 15-year-old, light beech laminate look.

"But it was in great condition and the tiny pot of savings we had left over after purchasing the house certainly wouldn't stretch to the thousands we had been quoted for a re-fit.

"I had used Frenchic previously on wooden furniture that I'd bought on Marketplace and absolutely loved the finish, but I'll admit I was concerned about the longevity of the finish on laminate and in such a high-use area."

Starting out with a very dated look, Stephanie joked she had "nothing to lose" by getting stuck into the transformation herself. Turning the light cabinets to a dark wood look, the handles on cupboards were also changed to a sleek rose gold.
