Seven charged as part of South Shields kidnapping probe after alleged victims 'held against their will' and assaulted; Six men and one woman have been charged with a series of offences.

Seven people are today due in court as part of a kidnapping probe, after a number of victims were allegedly held against their will and assaulted in South Shields.

Police arrested 10 people in a series of dawn raids in South Tyneside as part of the investigation, led by Northumbria Police's Major Investigation Team MIT.

The suspects, were held on suspicion of false imprisonment, blackmail and assault.

Now six men and one woman have been charged with a series of offences and are due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates Court today. One man, aged 30, remains in police custody, while another man, aged 29, and a 25-year-old woman have been released on bail.

Det Insp Mark Atherton said: "Following a concerning report made to us about a number of people being held against their will at an address in the area, an investigation was launched with a number of specialist detectives tasked with establishing exactly what happened.

"A number of people sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries and have now been safeguarded.
