Skincare expert shares £15 alternative to £99 'miracle' Medik8 anti-ageing retinal serum

So when I found out The Ordinary was launching a much cheaper alternative to Medik8's £99 Crystal Retinal, the benchmark for retinal on the market, I knew I wanted her opinion on it

Up until now, the Medik8 anti-ageing serum was her go-to recommendation for retinoids, with all of her clients saying they got amazing results using it. But the new Ordinary product could well dethrone it.

Retinol or retinal

First things first, it's important to differentiate retinal and retinol -the latter being the more popular. Both are part of the vitamin A family, commonly known as retinoids. However, retinal works 11 times faster than retinol. It's also the strongest form of retinoids you can get over the counter.

What is retinal good for

The active ingredient is great for a number of skin concerns, including signs of ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin texture. Retinal is good for breakouts too, as it has antibacterial properties that retinol does not have.

Medik8's Crystal Retinal vs The Ordinary's Retinal 0.2% Emulsion Serum

The benchmark for retinal on the market is Medik8's Crystal Retinal, due to the patented stabilisation and encapsulation processes the brand has developed to help stabilise retinal and increase efficacy. The Ordinary's new product, the Retinal 0.2% Emulsion Serum, contains as much retinal as the highest concentration of Crystal Retinal.
