Former Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse broke down in tears on live TV while making the announcement that he is retiring from football.

The Frenchman, who scored 11 goals in 38 games for Sunderland during the 2008-09 season, was moved to tears by a tribute from his former coach Guy Roux after announcing he was now hanging up his boots.

Roux gave Cisse his first taste of senior football at Auxerre, where he had come through the academy.

Cisse was brought to the Stadium of Light by Roy Keane on a season-long loan from Marseille, and will be remembered fondly by Sunderland fans for scoring in both Wear-Tyne derbies he was involved in.
