Charis Mavrias and Cabral must consider taking a step down to kickstart their flagging careers, according to Gus Poyet.

The duo - brought in under the previous regime when director of football Roberto De Fanti and head coach Paolo Di Canio were in charge - have barely figured since Poyet took over 15 months ago.

Midfielder Cabral has not featured at all at first-team level while Greece international wideman Mavrias has made just one FA Cup outing - and that almost a year ago.

Head coach Poyet says they must now either decide whether look to move on during the January transfer window or continue waiting in the wings on Wearside.

Mavrias played for Sunderland under-21s yesterday in front of several scouts but failed to catch the eye.

Poyet has confirmed there has been interest in the pair, although he admits it would involve them dropping down a level to have the opportunity to prove themselves - but he believes that could be a risk worth taking for both of his forgotten men.

Poyet said: "It depends on the individual and the demand. It is not easy.

"That is the moment when you need to make a decision in your career.

"Do you sign a new contract elsewhere or wait?

"With Harry (Mavrias) and Cabral there has been a little bit of interest but...
