The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US road safety watchdog, has reportedly sent a letter to US-based electric car manufacturer Tesla, asking why it has not issued a recall to address software changes made to its Autopilot driver-assistance system.

The automaker had sent out an over-the-air update to its vehicles in September, which was reportedly aimed at helping them better detect emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. The update followed an NHTSA investigation into Autopilot following 12 reported collisions between Tesla cars and emergency vehicles.
