The beautiful Welsh beach cove only accessible via a tucked-away track

You may be forgiven for thinking you've gone to the wrong place to start with. But when the bay opens out before your eyes, it's so beautiful, it looks as though you might have been transported all the way to Australia rather than Wales

The sand is golden and the sea is crystal clear making it a lovely place to take the kids for a paddle during the school holidays. It's ideal for sandcastle-building and picnics on the beach. In fact, do take a picnic as there are no facilities at the beach.

Being a cove surrounded by the grassy headlands of Dinas and Graig Ddu on the Llyn Peninsula, it offers shelter, making it a real suntrap. West-facing, it's a dreamy place to watch the sunset over the water.

It takes around three hours and 40 minutes to drive there from Birmingham -but you'll be rewarded for your efforts. People who have found the cove have given it a 4.7 star rating on Google and described it 'peaceful' and 'the best' in their reviews.

Unlike nearby Abersoch, Criccieth, Porthmadog and Aberdaron, Porth Iago is lesser known so it doesn’t get so busy. Look out for the ancient hill fort lookout overlooking the bay.
