The brave who put their lives on the line for others

Trying to imagine the horror faced by the emergency services who rushed to the scene willing to put their lives on the line to save those of others was impossible, and learning later that many of them had paid the ultimate sacrifice, brought me, and millions around the world like me, to tears.

But an idea of how it was for those involved in the rescue operation, was aroused graphically by a former New York fire fighter who now lives in North Wales, who bravely gave his memories of the aftermath of the attacks on New York which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and blighted those of many more, to the media on the 20th anniversary of the destruction of the Twin Towers.

I have visited Ground Zero, and found it a very moving experience, but at the time didn't know, that Nelson Haerr who now lives in Llanrwst, was a member of the emergency services who fought to save lives amongst the debris of the destroyed buildings. Off duty at the time of the attacks he rushed to his fire station and joined other colleagues taking part in the rescue operation.
