The bustling Essex beach 90 minutes from London perfect for a day trip -but which some locals 'can't stand'

From the sullen beauty of the Suffolk coastline to the vibrant cultural life of Margate, wherever you plan your day out you're more or less guaranteed a good time.

But, it seems if you head to one beach in Essex, you may be in for a bit of a surprise, at least according to some disgruntled locals.

The popular satirical reviewing site iLivehere is the bane of many small towns across the country as residents try to put down their areas.

It seems Clacton-On-Sea near Tendring is no exception.

One local branded it "London-by-the-sea" and called the piers "damp, dirty and disappointing."

Another vents: "Clacton. Where do I begin It’s HELL. Burning HELLFIRE. If you’re thinking of coming here, or god help you, thinking of moving here, DON’T!"

Strong words indeed, but as usual, the truth is far different.

In reality, Clacton, or "Little London" as some locals call it is a real delight.

There are plenty of shops, restaurants, attractions and leisure facilities throughout the town that are perfectly good destinations for residents.

The Clacton Pier is also well worth a visit, despite what the naysayers say.

The amusements along the front are still busy in the summer months, and there's no shortage of well-run food and drink businesses who capitalise on the seafront visitor trade.

And as for beaches, you're spoilt for choice.
