The London council that doesn't fly the St George's flag amid calls to 'celebrate everything English'

It comes after Westminster City’s opposition leader, cllr Paul Swaddle, wrote to council’s chief executive and leader asking for the flag to be flown on St George’s day, which is today April 23. In a tweet, cllr Swaddle said his request was turned down

He later told MyLondon: “I think that we should be flying St George’s Flag and celebrating everything English…Councils in Wales and Scotland rightly celebrate their equivalent days.” He added: “The flagpole at City Hall is rightly used for celebrating events such as Pride and Armed Forces day and we should include St George’s Day.”

A Westminster City Council spokesperson said: “Historically the Council has not flown the flags of nations on Saints Days, but flies the union flag all year round. We have publicly wished a happy St George’s Day to all those who are celebrating.” MyLondon council leader Adam Hug for comment but were directed to the press team, which it understands is routine procedure.
