1952 24 SEPTEMBER The first KFC franchise was opened. Recognising the potential of restaurant franchising, Colonel Harland Sanders chose a location near Salt Lake City in Utah. By 1963 the company had more than 600 outlets, making it the largest fast-food operation in the country. It was one of the first US fast-food chains to expand internationally and now has more than 25,000 outlets in over 145 countries. The Colonel died aged 90 in 1980, but his whitesuited image is still used on the packaging.

22 SEPTEMBER US sitcom Friends first aired on NBC. Set in New York, the Emmy award-winning comedy series made household names of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer - and produced multiple memorable quotes. Running for 10 seasons, the 2004 finale attracted about 52.5 million American viewers, making it TV's most-watched episode of the noughties. Fans were treated to a special, Friends: The Reunion, in May this year.

21 SEPTEMBER Mark Zuckerberg pledged $3 billion to rid the world of disease.
