Tree to be planted to remember South Shields teen who died in freak sunbed accident; A year on from his death, family and friends of South Shields teen Grant Adams will gather to remember him.

One year on from his death, a special tree will today be planted to remember teenager Grant Adams who died after a falling on a sunbed.

Loved ones of the tragic dad-to-be will meet on a South Shields field close to where he lived for the planting.

Grant's mum, Amanda Smedley, 39, said: "It's a special place where he used to sit and spend time, so we thought it would be a nice way to remember him."

The teenager's jugular vein was pierced in the freak accident at his home in South Shields a year ago. The glass tube cut Grant's neck in two places, causing the fatal wounds. He was just 17.

Amanda continued: "I'm going to be going to work through the anniversary, just to keep busy because I don't want to think about things.

"I know it's going to be a tough day but we wanted to plant the tree as a way of keeping his memory alive."

The family have had a special plaque made to sit with the tree, It has Grant's name, date of birth, and a short message that reads: "Memories of you will live forever. Legend".

The 17-year-old had got out of bed when he tripped over a wire and fell into the free-standing sunbed before falling down the stairs. Grant, who had just qualified as a bricklayer, was given treatment to stem the flow of blood and was flown to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
