Prime Minister Vereshchuk warned: “The networks will not cope. You see what Russia is doing. We need to survive the winter.”

Ukraine worries Russia could soon launch a combined attack from Belarus after the Kremlin shifted more forces to its ally.

After struggling for months, Vladimir Putin has moved thousands of troops to its neighbour, sparking speculation the two countries may mount a joint offensive on northern Ukraine.

Kyiv is only about 60 miles from the Belarus border and Russia launched part of its attack on Ukraine via there on February 24, but was soon forced to retreat by staunch defenders.

Military experts fear an attack could come at any time. Belarus has nearly 50,000 active personnel and nearly 500 tanks but has also given some of its arsenal to Moscow as Russia runs low.

Russian forces are digging in for the "heaviest of battles" in the strategic southern region of Kherson, a senior Ukrainian official said, as the Kremlin prepares to defend the largest city under its control in Ukraine.

Russian forces in the region have been driven back in recent weeks and risk being trapped on the west bank of the Dnipro River, where the provincial capital of Kherson has been in Russian hands since the early days of the invasion of Ukraine eight months ago.

Russian-installed authorities have been encouraging residents to flee to the east bank, but Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said there was no sign that Russian forces themselves were preparing to abandon the city.

Sky News Europe correspondent Adam Parsons said: "We were told that Russian troops have begun to move out in what seems to be not a surrender but a tactical withdrawal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's troops could score a defining win by liberating the annexed peninsula.

Russia has been dealt a devastating blow after a retired US Army officer perfectly pinpointed how Ukraine can liberate the annexed region of Crimea by mid-2023.

Last month, Vladimir Putin saw the Kerch Bridge between Crimea and Russia rocked by a shuge explosion following a surprise attack that saw parts of the structure collapse.

The peninsula is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet and numerous military airports and bases, with it also being critical for operational and logistical support of Russia's southern front in Ukraine.

Ukrainian troops are holding out against repeated attacks near two towns in the eastern Donbas region, President Zelensky said.

Speaking in his evening address he said the most severe fighting is taking place near Avdiivka, outside Donetsk, and Bakhmut, further to the northeast.

However he also said there would be good news from the front but gave no further details.

"Generally, we are strengthening our positions all over the frontline, reducing the invaders' capabilities, destroying their logistics, and preparing good news for Ukraine," he said.
