Prescriptions for Viagra and similar drugs have increased in the North East following a decline in costs.

Sildenafil, the drug commonly known as Viagra, has saw tumbling costs since the UK patent on it expired back in 2013. This has allowed a number of companies besides its original manufacturer, Pfizer, to manufacture the drug for the same purposes.

Now, with theNHSable to save money on the drug due through increased supply, prescriptions of it have been on the up throughout the North East over the last five years.

Data from the NHS prescription finds that prescriptions of sildenafil have almost doubled over the given timespan, with numbers in Newcastle Gateshead jumping from 17,282 in 2012/2013 to 33,934 in 2018.

Similar increases have also been reported inNorthumberland, North Tyneside,County Durhamand Darlington, with prescriptions in the latter accounting roughly for one in every 5.8 men

Yet that might not be the full picture. The databank methodology counts prescriptions as single items, rather than how many pills have been prescribed.

It means one man can have many sildenafil prescriptions counted over the course of a year.

Outside of the North East, across England as a whole, there were 3.3m Sildenafil prescriptions in the 12 months to May this year. That works out as one for every 6.4 adult men.
