Why did Kenny Dalglish break up the Entertainers? Les Ferdinand gives his answer; Les Ferdinand looks back on the 5-0 hammering of Manchester United and where it all went wrong for Newcastle after that.

Byline: Lee Ryder

Les Ferdinand believes that Newcastle United actually played better against Manchester United 12 months before the famous 5-0 demolition job at St James' Park.

Back in March 1996, with the Magpies top of the table in the Premier League, an incredible man of the match performance from Peter Schmeichel denied the black and whites the victory that would have surely put them on the way to the title.

A combination of Schmeichel's saves and a fortunate Eric Cantona winner nicked it for Alex Ferguson's side and the rest as they say is history.

Ferdinand told the Chronicle in an exclusive interview: "I remember they beat us 1-0 the season before.

"On that night we hit the crossbar, hit the post, I had chances and Schmeichel made some great saves.

"We probably played better on the night we lost 1-0 in terms of performance.

"We done better as an all round team we just didn't put the ball in the back of the net.

"I think on that night had we scored the first goal then we'd have gone on and had the same scoreline as in 1996 in the 5-0.

"I suppose the 5-0 made up for all of those missed chances."

And although the game sticks out in Ferdinand's memory, he can't believe that people are still reflecting on the 5-0 win 20 years later.

An emotional Philippe Albert talks about THAT goal against Manchester United

He said: "I can't believe people are still talking about it!

"But wow, I just remember it being one hell of a game.

"I played in some pretty exciting games up at Newcastle down the years.

"But that was the one that stood out more than any other because we just felt like we owed something back to the supporters.

"We'd been beaten, humiliated and slapped around for a few years and that was our way of giving something back to the fans."

Just 13 weeks after the big win over Fergie's side, Newcastle parted company with Kevin Keegan and Ferdinand was sold to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the same season.
