The Covid-19 Pandemic
‘Covid-19 presents an extraordinary challenge, and FIDIC com-
mends all members of the construction community to be focused
on the successful delivery of the project before them in a way that
sustains the long-term viability of the construction community.’*
I
wholly endorse FIDIC’s wise advice quoted above. I agree that
the construction community, employers, contractors, subcon-
tractors and suppliers alike must remain focused on the successful
delivery of their projects and remain dedic ated to t his goal as long as
the impact of the pandemic persists.
Covid-19 created an early dilemma for most contractors, includ-
ing my client s: should they or should they not close their construc-
tion sites? e safety of site operatives, employer’s sta and repre-
sentatives, inspectors and all other personnel visiting their various
project sites was a serious consideration.
Remedies and compensat ion for the busi nesses and the people
directly and indirect ly aected by the pandemic has become, and
continues to be, a worldwide debate. Within the construction com-
munity, the debate invariably leans towards relief for contractors in
the form of time and money.
In my research into the impact of the pandemic and possible
relief for contractors, I explored how the parties – my clients – can
approach this issue to achieve a satisfactory and sensible outcome
and, more importantly, avoid conict.
